Parenting wasn’t supposed to feel like this

Maybe you thought you’d be a calmer parent.

More patient. More confident. Better able to handle the hard moments without losing your cool.

But raising kids is hard.

After years of too little sleep, too little time for yourself, the never-ending mental load and the 24/7 relentlessness of meeting everyone else’s needs, staying calm can start to feel like one more thing you’re failing at.

I get it, because I’ve been there.

When my twins arrived, I had four children under school age, and was drowning in overwhelm. I barely had time to finish a cup of tea, let alone figure out how to stay calm and confident when things got messy.

And things got messy a LOT.

Over the years, both as a parent and through my work supporting families, I discovered something important:

Calm parenting isn’t about trying harder to stay calm.

It’s not taking more deep breaths.
It’s not counting to ten.
It’s not relying on willpower.

And it’s definitely not promising yourself again that tomorrow you won’t shout.

Because calm parenting is about much more than keeping your cool.

It’s about understanding what’s happening beneath your child’s behaviour. It’s knowing when to connect and when to confidently take the lead. It’s setting boundaries without getting pulled into endless power struggles. And it’s building your own capacity so you can respond to the hard moments instead of constantly reacting to them.

That’s why I wrote Stop Parenting in Survival Mode.

This book gives you a clear path out of reactive, overwhelmed parenting and towards something different: calm, connected leadership.

Inside, you’ll discover the Chaos to Calm Parenting Formula, my practical step-by-step framework designed to help you understand what’s keeping your family stuck, strengthen connection with your child, rethink behaviour and discipline, and become a more confident leader in your home.

So if you’re tired of the power struggles, the overwhelm and the guilt that follows the moments you wish you’d handled differently, this book is for you.

Whether you’re parenting little ones, tweens or teens, you don’t need to become a perfectly calm parent.

You need a way out of survival mode.

The Problem With Mainstream Parenting Advice

Parenting advice has a lot to answer for.

First up: why is it so complicated?

When you’re struggling, you don’t need another 300 things to remember. You need clear, practical guidance that makes sense when you’re actually in the moment.

And then there’s the conflicting advice.

One expert tells you to get tougher. Another tells you to be more gentle. Social media serves up an endless stream of scripts, hacks, rules and opinions.

And the online parent groups?

Don’t even get me started. 🙄

No wonder so many parents feel confused.

The problem isn’t that we need more parenting advice. We need a clear way to make sense of the advice we already have.

A framework that helps us understand what’s happening, decide what our child needs from us, and know what to do next.

That’s where Stop Parenting in Survival Mode is different.

I bring together years of professional experience supporting parents and families with something equally important: real-life experience raising four children of my own.

✅ I’ve supported thousands of parents through my books, programs and workshops
✅ I’ve spent more than a decade designing and delivering parenting education
✅ And I’m a mum of four, so I know the 'Oh God, am I messing this up?' spiral first-hand

I’m not interested in giving you another collection of parenting 'tips and tricks.'

Your parenting deserves more than that.

I wrote this book to give you what I wish I’d had when I was drowning in overwhelm: a simple framework for understanding your parenting, your child and what needs to change.

Not perfection.

Not another impossible standard to live up to.

A way forward.

Parenting advice is everywhere.

Your path from chaos to calm starts here.

How would you like to:

  • Stay in charge of your reactions when parenting gets hard, instead of heading straight into overwhelm?

  • Handle challenging behaviour with more confidence, without getting dragged into battles and crazy-making arguments?

  • Strengthen your 'I’ve got this' muscle, so you trust yourself to know when to connect, when to guide and when to take the lead?

…and actually feel good about the parent you’re becoming, instead of ending the day beating yourself up over everything you got wrong?

When did it all get so hard?!?

Parenting starts off relatively straightforward.

Feed them. Keep them clean. Somehow convince them to sleep.

It’s exhausting, sure. But at least you mostly know what the job is.

Then they get older.

They develop opinions. Big feelings. Strong wills. Sibling grievances. Selective hearing. And an uncanny ability to completely lose it over something you didn’t even realise was a problem.

Suddenly, it’s Emotions Central at your place. Someone’s always crying, yelling or losing it.

(Sometimes it’s you.)

And the parenting strategies that once seemed to work…don’t.

You want to be calm, patient and present. You want to be the steady parent your kids can rely on.

But instead, you find yourself snapping. Reacting. Second-guessing. Getting pulled into arguments you absolutely did not intend to have.

And then comes the guilt.

Why did I react like that?

Why won't they just listen?

Why does everything have to be such a battle?

And perhaps the hardest question of all:

Am I getting this parenting thing wrong?

If you’ve ever wondered that, you’re exactly who I wrote this book for.

You’re Not Stuck Here

If parenting has become harder than you ever expected, it doesn’t mean this is simply how things have to be.

Sometimes the biggest shift begins when you finally understand what’s been keeping you stuck.

When you understand what’s happening beneath your child’s behaviour.

When you stop measuring good parenting by how perfectly calm you can stay.

When you realise that connection and leadership aren’t opposites. Your child needs both.

And when you have a clear path to follow instead of trying another random strategy and hoping this one finally works.

Stop Parenting in Survival Mode is that starting point.

It won’t promise you perfect kids, perfect behaviour or a perfectly calm home.

It will give you something far more useful:

A new way to understand your parenting, and a practical path forward.

Finally, you'll be able to:

  • Stay composed and in control, even when faced with the biggest parenting dramas

  • Know what to do to manage behavioural challenges like not listening and defiance

  • Strengthen your relationship with your child and build a connection that can weather the teen years

The ideas in Stop Parenting in Survival Mode have evolved through years of working with parents.

Here's what readers have shared about putting those ideas into practice:

Being A Calm Parent Takes More Than Breathing Techniques

Maybe you’ve tried telling yourself you just need to stay calmer.

Take a breath. Count to ten. Walk away. Think peaceful thoughts. Try harder not to shout next time. There’s nothing wrong with any of these things.

But they’re not enough.

Because calm parenting isn’t simply about controlling your reactions. You also need to understand what’s happening beneath your child’s behaviour, know how to respond when emotions run high, and feel confident enough to lead when your child needs you to.

It took me a long time to figure that out.

When my firstborn was a preschooler, I was completely baffled by some of his behaviour.

Like many parents, I tried the things I thought I was supposed to do. Naughty steps. Time outs. Consequences.

Then my third pregnancy turned out to be twins and suddenly we were raising four young children.

School summer holidays + day-care shutdown = Longest. Holidays. Ever.

I really needed parenting to work.

Not in theory. Not in a peaceful house with a hypothetical child.

In this house. With these kids. On very little sleep.

I tried sticker charts elaborate enough to require their own project manager. Reward systems. Removing privileges and prized possessions. Consequences.

Some things worked for a while. Some made things worse.

But none of it gave me what I was really looking for: a way to understand what my children needed from me and the confidence to know how to respond.

So I went looking for better answers.

I immersed myself in parenting education and trained as a facilitator, determined to understand not just what worked, but why.

And the more I learned, the more my parenting changed.

I stopped relying on time outs and reward charts. I learned to look beneath behaviour instead of simply trying to stop it. I discovered that connection didn’t mean giving in, and boundaries didn’t require becoming harsher.

Most importantly, I became much more confident in my ability to understand my children and lead my family through the hard moments.

Not perfectly.

I still have four actual human children 😅.

But I no longer believe good parenting means controlling behaviour or somehow remaining perfectly calm through everything our kids throw at us.

It means having a way to find your footing when things get hard.

That journey, combined with everything I’ve learned through years of working professionally with parents and families, eventually became the Chaos to Calm Parenting Formula.

And in Stop Parenting in Survival Mode, I’m giving you the roadmap I wish I’d had all those years ago.

The Results?

A calmer, more connected and confident way to parent.

Stop Parenting in Survival Mode isn't about becoming a perfect parent.

It's about changing what happens when parenting gets hard.

As you put the ideas in this book into practice, there are three big shifts you can start working towards:

BIG WIN #1: A CALMER YOU

Imagine being able to meet the hard moments without immediately getting swept up in them.

Instead of parenting from stress, frustration or overwhelm, you'll learn to recognise what's happening inside you, strengthen your capacity and find your footing before you respond.

You won't suddenly become endlessly patient. Nobody is. But you'll have a way to come back to yourself when parenting knocks you sideways.

Less reacting. Less second-guessing. More 'I've got this.'

BIG WIN #2: A STRONGER CONNECTION

When you understand what's happening beneath behaviour, you start seeing your child differently.

Instead of automatically asking, 'How do I stop this behaviour?', you'll learn to ask what might be driving it and what your child needs from you in that moment.

That doesn't mean letting behaviour slide.

It means building a relationship where connection and boundaries can exist side by side, so your child experiences you as both a safe place to land and someone they can rely on to lead.

BIG WIN #3: CONFIDENT LEADERSHIP

No more trying to choose between being the strict parent and the soft parent.

You'll learn how to hold boundaries, respond to challenging behaviour and take charge when your child needs you to, without relying on fear, punishment or endless power struggles.

Because confident parenting isn't about controlling your child.

It's about knowing how to lead them.

And when you understand your role, parenting starts to feel a whole lot less confusing.

This isn't about perfect parenting.

It's about having a way forward when parenting gets hard.

THIS IS FOR YOU EVEN IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'VE TRIED EVERYTHING

Maybe you’ve already read the parenting books.

Tried the reward charts. The consequences. The scripts. The routines. Being firmer. Being gentler. Staying calm. Picking your battles.

And somehow, you still find yourself back in the same place.

That doesn’t mean you need another parenting trick.

It means you need a better way to understand how all the pieces fit together.

The Chaos to Calm Parenting Formula gives you a clear framework to come back to, so you’re not constantly searching for the next strategy every time something goes wrong.

And you don't need hours of spare time, colour-coded charts or a personality transplant to put it into practice.

I deliberately made Stop Parenting in Survival Mode practical and easy to follow because overwhelmed parents don't need another enormous parenting project.

You can start with where you are.

One idea. One interaction. One small shift at a time.

You don't have to overhaul your family overnight to start parenting differently.

'But I've tried everything…'
That's exactly why you don't need another disconnected parenting trick. You need a framework that helps everything make sense.

'I don't have time for another parenting program…'
You don't need one. The book is designed to be practical, straightforward and easy to start using in everyday family life.

'What if I keep getting it wrong?'
You will sometimes. We all do. This isn't about perfect parenting. It's about knowing how to find your way back when things go off course.

'But my child is different…'
Good. This isn't a one-size-fits-all script. The framework helps you understand the child in front of you and respond to what
they need.

Here's a fraction of what you'll discover:

  • Why so much parenting advice leaves parents more confused, not less and what to focus on instead.

  • The behaviour you most want to STOP could be the behaviour you most need to understand. Here’s why.

  • The #1 ingredient for calm parenting and why it has nothing to do with patience.

  • Warning: Chapter 4 will change how you see your child forever (my favourite chapter in the book).

  • What connection really means for your child (HINT: most parents have this wrong).

  • Reward charts. Time Out. The Naughty Step. What if the discipline tools we’ve relied on are solving the wrong problem?

  • Ever been told to ‘ignore the tantrum’? Why this popular parenting advice can completely miss the point.

  • The Great Discipline Con: the parenting lie we’ve been sold about discipline, and the chaos it’s creating in our homes.

  • The seesaw secret: the simple parenting balance that most of us struggle to get right.

  • Your child ISN’T listening. But probably not for the reason you think.

  • The 3 questions that reveal what’s hiding in plain sight in your relationship with your child.

  • Why you might need to 'woo' your child when your relationship has gone off track.

  • Why your child actually NEEDS you to get parenting wrong sometimes and the one thing that makes all the difference.

  • Too soft? Too strict? How to hold boundaries without becoming either a pushover or the family drill sergeant.

  • Your best insurance policy for the teen years and why it has nothing to do with keeping your child out of trouble.

  • What does an IKEA shelving unit have to do with better parenting? More than you’d think!

  • Want your child to develop emotional intelligence? Start with skipping this surprisingly common habit.

  • The toxic voice following you around after every parenting mistake and how to finally turn down the volume.

  • What Emerald City has to do with your parenting journey (and why you need a Yellow Brick Road to get there).

  • What happens when your child stops telling you everything? The one thing you’ll want firmly in place before the teen years arrive.

  • Your child’s most frustrating behaviours are actually secret messages - I'll show you how to decode them.

  • What matters MOST for your child’s future? The answer might change what you prioritise today.

    And that's only the beginning…

The best part is that this approach is...

IT'S MADE FOR BUSY PARENTS WHO DON’T NEED ANOTHER THING ON THEIR TO-DO LIST

I know you don't have hours to spend studying parenting theory.

And the last thing an overwhelmed parent needs is a complicated new system to implement perfectly.

That's why Stop Parenting in Survival Mode is designed to give you a clear path to follow, with practical ideas you can start applying to ordinary parenting moments straight away.

You don't have to change everything at once.

You don't have to memorise a hundred scripts.

And you definitely don't need to become a different person before any of this can work.

Start where you are. Take one step. Then another.

Because ultimately, this isn't about creating perfectly behaved children or a permanently peaceful home.

It's about making parenting feel more manageable...

...more connected...

...more intentional...

...and yes...

...MORE ENJOYABLE.

When parenting has felt hard for a long time, it's easy for stress, frustration and guilt to take up so much space that there isn't much room left for joy.

But getting out of survival mode isn't only about handling the hard moments better.

It's about creating more room for the good ones.

More moments when you actually enjoy your kids.

More confidence that you're doing okay.

More space to notice the family life that's happening around you instead of constantly

worrying about what you're getting wrong.

You don't need to love every minute of parenting.

But you deserve to enjoy more of it.

Bonus #1:

Bedtime Survival Guide

Bonus #2:

Bonus #3:

You're simply carrying too much.

This quick-reference reset will help you pause, recognise what's happening and work out what you need next.

You Don’t Have to Keep Parenting in Survival Mode

Maybe you recognise yourself somewhere on this page.

You know the kind of parent you want to be, but some days you just can't seem to get there.

You love your kids enormously, but parenting has become harder than you ever expected.

You don't need to become a perfect parent to change what happens next.

You need to understand what's keeping you stuck, what your child needs from you, and how to find your way back when things go off course.

That's what Stop Parenting in Survival Mode is here to help you do.

Not by giving you another impossible parenting standard.

Not by promising perfectly behaved children.

And not by telling you to simply 'stay calm.'

Instead, you'll have a practical framework to come back to again and again as your children grow and parenting changes.

More understanding.
More connection.
More confident leadership.

Less survival mode.

If you want to understand your child better, strengthen your connection, feel more confident around behaviour, and have a clear framework to follow, this book was written for you.

Q: What ages should my kids be?

A: The book is most relevant for parents of children from around 2 years through to the teen years. The situations may change as children grow, but the foundations of the approach, including connection, attachment, understanding behaviour and confident leadership, remain relevant across different stages of childhood.

Q: My child is neurodivergent. Will this book help me?

A: Absolutely, although this isn’t a specialist neurodivergence parenting book. The approach helps you look beneath behaviour and respond to the individual child in front of you, alongside any specialist support they may need.

A: Definitely not. This isn't a parenting overhaul you have to implement by Monday morning. Start with what resonates. Try one idea. Notice what changes. Come back to the framework when you need it. Small shifts count.

Q: How is this book different from other parenting books?

A: This isn’t another collection of parenting hacks or scripts. The Chaos to Calm Parenting Formula helps you understand why things are happening, so you can respond to the child in front of you with greater calm, connection and confidence.

A: You'll receive a digital PDF copy of Stop Parenting in Survival Mode, along with your four bonus resources. Everything is delivered digitally, so you can start reading straight away.

Take your time to read the book and explore the bonuses. If you decide it wasn't valuable to you, simply email [email protected] and we'll refund your purchase.

Q: What if I need more support?

A: You're not alone - and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. If you’d love extra guidance, community, or just a place to turn when things get tough, there’s a calm, supportive space waiting for you. I’ll tell you more inside the book. 😊

Hi, I’m Karina.

I’m a parenting educator, coach, author and mum of four.

For more than two decades, I’ve worked professionally with children, teenagers, adults and families. I have qualifications in psychology and welfare, and I’m an accredited facilitator of Tuning in to Kids, Tuning in to Teens and Circle of Security. I’ve also delivered early parenting education through Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

But some of my biggest parenting lessons have come from raising my own four children.

I’ve done the shouting, the guilt and the second-guessing. I’ve tried things that didn’t work, learned better ways and changed my thinking along the way.

That combination of professional knowledge and real-life parenting experience is at the heart of Stop Parenting in Survival Mode.

I’m not interested in teaching you how to become a perfect parent.

I want to help you understand your child, trust yourself and become the calm, connected leader your family needs.

That’s why I wrote this book.
